Few views of the Second Seminole War show the fighting as directly as this one, with Seminole warriors attacking a wooden blockhouse. Such posts were small, log-walled outposts with loopholes for rifles, built across Florida after hostilities began in late 1835 to guard roads, supply lines and settlers. This hand-colored lithograph is number six in a set of eight *Views of Florida*, issued in Charleston in 1837 by T.F. Gray and James for a South Carolina public that followed the war closely. Prints like it turned distant frontier fighting into images that families could hang on a wall.
