A ronin, a samurai without a lord, appears in a doorway with his swords at his side, and the weapons are the chief subject of this color woodcut. The print dates to 1869, the year after the Meiji Restoration of 1868 began dismantling the feudal order that had given samurai their rank and stipends. Many ronin had been retainers of lords whose domains had fallen apart, leaving them without income or a clear place in society. Printmakers of the period often returned to such figures, so the image reflects both a declining warrior class and the romantic appeal that still clung to it.
