A lone ronin, a samurai left without a lord, turns aside a volley of arrows with his blade, and the sword is the focal point of the composition. The print dates to 1869, just after the Meiji Restoration of 1868 began dismantling the feudal system that had given samurai their rank and income, leaving many warriors without a clear place in society. Masterless fighters like this one were familiar figures in Japanese woodblock prints, and scenes of dramatic combat were popular in this period, often reflecting a nostalgia for a world of swords that was fading.
