This print shows a ronin, a samurai without a lord, with a face twisted into a fierce grimace, a pose that makes his mood as much the subject as his weapons. Printed in 1869, it dates from the years just after the Meiji Restoration of 1868, when the old feudal order was collapsing and many samurai lost their stipends and status. Color woodcuts of warriors like this were popular in that period, and the emphasis on swords and dramatic expression reflects both the older samurai legend and the uncertain present in which it was drawn.
