Motorcycles taken into military service in Paris give this glass negative its particular subject. The Bain News Service, a New York picture agency that supplied newspapers in the early twentieth century, made the negative, though the date on its caption data is unverified. France requisitioned civilian motor vehicles during the First World War, when the army needed transport, so the scene may come from that period, though the record does not confirm it. It is worth noticing how everyday two-wheeled machines became wartime resources.
