André Citroën, the French engineer whose name went onto one of Europe's best-known car brands, is the subject here, and the caption casts him as "the Henry Ford of France," a comparison that reflects how he applied mass-production methods to automobiles. Citroën had borrowed heavily from American assembly-line practice after touring Ford's plants, and by the mid-1920s his company was building affordable cars on a scale that made the comparison natural. The photograph dates to 1924, a period when his firm was expanding rapidly and drawing wide attention in the press. Portrait prints of industrialists from this era often served as publicity, so the image also shows how manufacturers presented themselves to the public.
