The Crown Victoria in this 1956 print is a hardtop model, the body style that gave the name its glass-roofed look. Ford introduced the Crown Victoria as a flagship trim in 1955, and the 1956 car carried the chrome-heavy, tail-finned styling typical of the mid-1950s, when Detroit was competing hard for buyers with bigger engines and brighter trim. The photograph comes from the Ford Motor Company's own publicity files, so it was made to show off the vehicle's lines for catalogs and press use. It is a useful record of how manufacturers presented their products in the decade after the war.
