Sunburst, North Carolina, in 1912 was a small mountain community whose fortunes followed the timber, rail, and mill economy of the state's western counties. Lumber companies were cutting the region's forests hard in those years, and the railroads that ran up the river valleys carried logs and finished goods out and brought workers in. Across the mountains, the big paper mill at Canton, opened in 1908, showed how quickly industry was arriving in the hills. Most families here still relied on farming, small stores, and seasonal work, and they measured progress by new rail connections, schools, and churches. The panorama records a place on the cusp of change, when the old rural order was giving way to logging camps and mill payrolls.
