This glass negative is catalogued under the name Solly Joel, a title the Bain News Service recorded on the negative or its caption card and that the Library of Congress has not independently verified. Joel was a member of the Johannesburg mining and diamond family, and he became known in Britain as a wealthy racehorse owner and a prominent figure on the turf. The Bain agency, founded by George Grantham Bain in New York, sold news photographs of public figures from about 1900 into the 1920s, and its glass negatives like this one were usually made for quick reproduction in newspapers. The record gives no date, so the sitting is best read as a portrait from the agency's wider run of society and sporting figures of the early twentieth century.
