The name attached to this glass negative, Rafael Sanchez (Aballi), comes from data the Bain News Service recorded on the negative or its caption card, and that data is unverified, so the sitter's identity should be treated as provisional. The negative belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, the work of a New York news photography agency that supplied pictures of people and events to newspapers in the early twentieth century. Glass plates were the standard medium for press photography before film became common, and their small format makes each one a physical record of the agency's daily output. The sitter's pose and dress are the best guides to when the picture was made.
