A glass negative from the Bain News Service records a statue of Frederick Douglass, the abolitionist, orator, and writer who escaped slavery in Maryland and became one of the most prominent Americans of the nineteenth century. The record gives no date or location, and the title comes from Bain's unverified notes, so the exact monument pictured is uncertain. Bain's New York agency made news photographs in the early twentieth century, and public sculptures of Douglass from that period often marked civic dedications and the growing effort to honor his legacy after his death in 1895.
