The only identifying detail on this glass negative is the caption "Fred. Chirons," which the Bain News Service recorded on the negative or its caption card. The record marks that name as unverified, and no date is given, so the subject and the occasion remain uncertain. George Grantham Bain started his news photo service in New York around 1899, and for roughly two decades it supplied press pictures of people, events and street life to newspapers. Glass plates like this one were standard for that work in the early twentieth century, and the Bain files are valued today for their record of everyday life in that period.
