The portrait of Mrs. E.W. Beattie survives as a glass negative, a fragile format common in newspaper and studio work in the early twentieth century. Its title comes from data the Bain News Service recorded on the negative or its caption card, and the record gives no date or further detail about the sitter, so the identification should be treated as provisional. The Bain News Service was a New York photo agency founded by George Grantham Bain that supplied pictures of people and events to newspapers, and its archive, now held by the Library of Congress, documents American life from about 1900 into the 1920s.
