This glass negative shows Mrs. Barney Bernard, identified by the Bain News Service caption as the wife of the stage comedian Barney Bernard, whose work on the New York stage made him a familiar name in the early twentieth century. The title comes from caption cards that the agency wrote and that have not been independently verified, so the sitter's identity should be read with that in mind. Bain News Service was a New York photo agency that supplied press pictures of theater people, public figures, and current events, and its glass plates were the working medium of news photography of the period. The format is worth noticing: the sharp detail and tonal range of a large glass plate were prized by editors who needed reproducible images for newspapers.
