The only identification for this glass negative is the pair of names, Fred Stock and Vera, taken from a caption card that the Library of Congress notes has not been verified. Nothing else about the sitters is recorded, so the portrait is best read through its medium and origin. George Grantham Bain founded his New York news photo service around 1899, and it supplied newspapers with pictures of people and events in the early twentieth century. Small glass plates like this one were the standard working format of such agencies, and their dates and captions are often incomplete.
