The name on this glass negative, Zakhorff & Hansen, is the only clue to its subject, and it reads like a business or partnership rather than a person or landmark. Bain News Service, the New York picture agency that George Grantham Bain founded around 1900, supplied news photographs to newspapers for more than two decades, and its negatives were often filed with caption cards like this one. The Library of Congress notes that the title comes from unverified card data, so the firm's identity and the picture's date remain uncertain. Such gaps are common in the collection, where many plates were catalogued with only partial information.
