Arthur De Greef is named on this glass negative as a Belgian pianist, a identification the Library of Congress notes is unverified and taken from the Bain News Service caption cards. De Greef was a concert performer of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries who toured Europe and North America, so a studio or press portrait of a touring musician fits the purpose of the Bain agency. The Bain News Service, a New York photo business active from about 1900 into the 1920s, sold images of celebrities, politicians and performers to newspapers, and its glass negatives are valued today as a record of that period's public figures. The record gives no exact date, so the picture is best placed by the agency's working years rather than a specific occasion.
