A name in the Sewall family, long associated with shipbuilding in Bath, Maine, is attached to this couple, though the caption comes from Bain News Service cards that were never independently verified. Bain's New York agency supplied news pictures to newspapers in the early twentieth century, and its glass negatives often record prominent people and public life of the period. With no date on the record, the exact occasion of this portrait is unclear, so it is best read as an example of the well-to-do private life that the agency photographed and circulated.
