Few seaside towns on the Massachusetts North Shore are as well known as Swampscott, where Calvin Coolidge and his wife, Grace, appear together in this picture. The record gives no date, but Coolidge rose from the Massachusetts governorship to the vice presidency and then the presidency during the 1920s, the years when Bain News Service was most active. That agency, based in New York, sold news photographs to newspapers, and its glass negatives are a major source for images of American public life from about 1900 through the 1920s.
