Pictured are Mahmoud Samy Pacha and his wife, though the names come from caption cards the Bain News Service wrote for the negative, and the record marks them as unverified. Mahmoud Samy Pacha was an Egyptian statesman and a figure in the country's political life during the early twentieth century, when Egypt was under British influence but still governed by its own leaders. Bain's agency supplied newspapers with news and portrait photographs, and its glass negatives were often made quickly for reproduction, so the image is best read as a record of a prominent couple in the period rather than a fully documented portrait.
