The caption names the engineer Anton Flettner alongside his wife, though the identification comes from the Bain News Service's own notes and has not been independently verified. Flettner was a German inventor best known for the rotor ship, a vessel driven by tall spinning cylinders that use the Magnus effect to catch the wind, and he later worked on helicopter designs. The Bain News Service was a New York picture agency that supplied photographs to newspapers, so the sitter's public profile probably explains why the picture was made. The glass negative carries no firm date.
