Nora Bayes, a vaudeville singer and comedian, is the named subject of this glass negative, which shows her with a child and a man the record lists as Arthur Gordoni. The Bain News Service, founded in New York around 1899 by George Grantham Bain, sold press photographs of performers, politicians and newsworthy people to newspapers. The title comes from unverified caption data, so the identities of the man and child remain uncertain. Bayes was one of the most popular stage stars of her day, known for hits such as "Shine On, Harvest Moon.
