May Peterson was a stage actress and singer who appeared in Broadway musicals in the early 1900s, and this glass negative is one of the portraits that the Bain News Service, a New York press photo agency, produced of performers of that era. The George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress holds tens of thousands of such images, made for newspapers and magazines that wanted pictures of theater people, politicians and newsworthy figures. The record gives only the name supplied on the negative or its caption card, and the date is not recorded, so the exact year of the sitting is unknown. Glass plates like this one were the standard medium of news photography before roll film became common.
