The record gives us little to go on beyond a single word: "Porch," a title the Bain News Service attached to this glass negative from its own negatives or caption cards, with the date unknown and the attribution unverified. The Bain collection itself is well documented. George Grantham Bain ran a news photo agency in New York from the early 1900s until about 1915, selling pictures of people, buildings, and events to newspapers. Its glass plates, now at the Library of Congress, offer a broad look at American life in those years, and many of its scenes are of ordinary domestic architecture like this one.
