The only identifying detail this negative offers is its title, "Peterson," a surname taken from caption cards that the Bain News Service supplied and that have not been independently verified. The record gives no date or precise subject, so the sitter, place and occasion remain unknown. George Grantham Bain founded his New York news photo agency around the turn of the twentieth century, and it supplied newspapers and magazines with pictures of public figures, events and everyday life through the 1910s and 1920s. Glass negatives like this one were the standard working medium of that era, so the plate itself is a record of how the agency captured and filed its images.
