Comedian Fanny Brice and her husband, gambler Nick Arnstein, were a favorite subject of New York newspapers, and this glass negative from the Bain News Service shows the couple together. Brice, a star of the Ziegfeld Follies, married Arnstein in 1918, and his 1923 conviction for mail fraud turned their marriage into steady tabloid copy. The Bain agency supplied pictures to newspapers from the early 1900s into the 1930s, and its glass plates preserve the sharp detail of a format that was common before film became standard. The record gives no date for the picture, so its exact occasion is uncertain.
