The record names Ulysses S. Grant, the Union general and 18th president, but the title is an unverified note from the Bain News Service, and the date is unknown. Grant left office in 1877 and died in 1885, while the Bain agency worked in the early twentieth century, so this picture most likely reproduces an older portrait or carries a name that needs checking. Such copy negatives show how newspaper files kept the faces of famous men in circulation long after they were gone.
