The record names Ulysses S. Grant as the sitter, though that title comes from unverified data on the negative or its caption card. Grant led Union armies in the Civil War and served as the 18th president from 1869 to 1877, and he died in 1885, well before the Bain News Service began its work in New York around 1899. The undated image therefore may reflect a reused or copied portrait rather than a new sitting, though the record does not say so. Glass negatives of this kind show how news pictures were stored and reproduced in the early twentieth century.
