The sitter appears here only under the name Hilda James, a title the Library of Congress notes was taken from unverified data on the negative or its caption card, so her identity remains uncertain. The picture survives as a small glass negative of the kind George Grantham Bain's news photography service produced in New York in the early 1900s, when agencies supplied images to newspapers that needed them quickly. The record gives no date, so the image is best understood within that broad period of commercial press photography, when portraits and news pictures were widely circulated and captions were not always checked. It belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection.
