The cadets in this photograph belong to St. Mary's Star of the Sea, a Catholic parish, and the bilingual caption, with its Spanish wording, marks them as taking part in a Columbus Day parade in New York. Such processions were a common way for parish and civic groups to honor Christopher Columbus and to show their place in the city, and the uniformed youth units that marched in them were a familiar sight in the early twentieth century. The picture dates from roughly 1900 to 1923, a period when Columbus Day parades were growing in popularity, and the Frank and Frances Carpenter Collection gives it a documentary character.
