A name painted on the hull, "J. Duvall," and a notation that the scene may be in Ontario set this view apart from other schooner pictures on the board. The Welland Canal, cut across the Niagara Peninsula to link Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, let lake vessels bypass Niagara Falls, and schooners of this size carried grain, coal, and lumber through its locks. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this 8 by 10 inch glass plate negative around 1905, sold views of American and Canadian scenery and commerce, so the picture also documents how working lake craft looked at the time.
