Men step across from a dock onto the deck of a fishing schooner in this c1903 view, one of the many scenes the Detroit Publishing Company made of working waterfronts. The company, based in Detroit, produced a huge range of views for postcards and travel books, and its photographers often used large-format cameras and hand-colored processes to capture everyday commerce. Fishing schooners of this period were sturdy two- and three-masted vessels that carried catch and crew along the Atlantic coast and Great Lakes, so the scene offers a glimpse of a trade that depended on wooden hulls and manual labor. The record is based on an old caption card and is unverified, so the exact location is best treated as uncertain.
