The subject here is the schooner yacht Sappho, a 310-ton vessel owned by William P. Douglass, who was vice-commodore of the New York Yacht Club. A.C. Smith's painting was reproduced as an illustration in Hamilton Morton's 1874 nautical poem *The America's Cup*, on page 52. The poem's theme reflects the rivalry that followed the schooner America's 1851 victory in the race for the cup, a contest that made large racing schooners symbols of American yachting prestige. Smith's view of the Sappho shows the vessel under sail, which is worth noting for anyone interested in how yachts were drawn and admired in the 1870s.
