Cambria was a British schooner yacht of 199 tons, owned by James Ashbury, that crossed the Atlantic in 1870 to challenge American yachts for the America's Cup. Its visit drew wide attention in New York, where the rivalry between British and American sailing was a popular subject for newspapers and print publishers. Currier & Ives, the New York firm known for its inexpensive lithographs, issued this hand-colored view of the vessel and its rig. Prints like this one show how closely the public followed ocean racing in the decades after the Civil War.
