Shot in Denver around 1895, this view shows a crowd gathered outside the residence of a man identified only as Fox, who was known as the "Healer," as treatment began at nine in the morning. Waiting crowds like this one were common in the 1890s, when faith healers and self-styled doctors drew large followings in American cities and patients often lined up before dawn for a chance to be seen. The print was copyrighted by W.A. White of Raton, New Mexico, a photographer who sold views of such scenes, so it offers a record of ordinary spectators and the street life around a private home turned into a place of public healing.
