Sherman Avenue in Denver is the subject here, a street the record links to William Henry Jackson, who is known to have photographed it in the 1880s. This large glass negative, probably made between 1900 and 1920, was later issued by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that sold views of American towns, scenery and streets to a wide public. Jackson's earlier Colorado survey work helped establish a visual record of the state's growing towns, so a later view of the same street offers a useful point of comparison. The 8 by 10 inch format gives the scene a sharp detail for studying street life, buildings and the changes Denver underwent in the early twentieth century.
