This photograph shows a stone shelter house that the architect J.B. Benedict designed for the city of Denver, set in the Rocky Mountains. Shelter houses like this one gave visitors a sheltered place to rest, eat, and take in mountain views, and many were built of local stone in a rustic style that blended with the landscape. The print comes from the Frances Benjamin Johnston Collection at the Library of Congress, whose photographer documented American buildings and their settings in the early twentieth century. Its stonework and construction are the features most worth studying.
