Columbia, South Carolina, in 1872 was the state capital, still recovering from the fire that swept much of the city when Union troops occupied it in February 1865. New brick and frame buildings had replaced many losses, and rail lines to Charleston, Charlotte, and Augusta carried cotton and merchandise through town. During Reconstruction, the legislature that met in the State House included many Black lawmakers, making the capital a center of contest between Republicans and the Democrats who would regain control of the state within a few years. Residents knew Columbia as the seat of state government and as home to South Carolina College, whose campus stood on the north side of town.
