Raleigh in 1872 was the seat of state government in North Carolina, a small city whose streets still radiated from the Capitol square laid out when the town was founded in 1792. Reconstruction politics shaped daily life, with the legislature and state offices drawing lawyers, officials, and lobbyists, while newly freed residents organized schools and churches. Shaw University, founded in 1865 to educate Black students, and the Peace Institute for women gave the town an educational reputation beyond its size. Its economy rested on cotton, tobacco, and lumber moving along the railroad lines that met there, which made Raleigh a regional marketplace as well as a political center. Residents would have known it above all as the capital, a place where the state's postwar future was being argued out.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Raleigh, North Carolina, drawn in 1872. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives. Reproduced from the original in the Library of Congress collections. Printed to order on archival paper. Free shipping on all US orders.
