High Point, North Carolina, in 1913 was a Piedmont railroad town whose fortunes rested largely on furniture. The North Carolina Railroad reached the site in the 1850s, and by the early twentieth century the rail lines crossing there carried chairs, case goods and upholstered pieces to buyers across the country. Factories and supply shops clustered near the tracks, and the town was already known regionally for its furniture trade, a reputation that would soon draw buyers to its markets. Hosiery and other mills added to the workforce and drew families from surrounding farms into town. Residents would have known High Point as a busy, hard-working place where mill whistles marked the shifts.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of High Point, North Carolina, drawn in 1913. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
