A group portrait of unidentified sitters, labeled "Gerald Bading" on the negative sleeves, opens a window onto the work of the National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio whose glass negatives record much of the city's life in the early twentieth century. The name is unverified, so treat it as a working label rather than settled fact. Dated to about 1922, the plate shows streaks and blemishes caused by the natural deterioration of its original coating, which is worth noticing when judging the image. Herbert A. French gave the negative to the Library of Congress in 1947.
