The White Lot, the open grassy expanse southwest of the White House, was a common place for troops to drill and be reviewed in the early 1900s. This glass negative shows Marines assembled there, the kind of ceremonial scene the National Photo Company, a Washington firm known for its views of the capital, turned into postcards and prints. The title and 1923 date come from the company's notes and neighboring negatives, so they are unverified, but the plate still shows the formation and uniforms of the day. Age has left streaks across the glass, which adds to its character as a document.
