The title names two companions, Blackie and Tiger, but the National Photo Company's label is unverified, so what the names refer to is uncertain. The date of about 1923 is inferred from negatives in the same range rather than from the image itself. Herbert A. French gave the plate to the Library of Congress in 1947. The company made a large body of commercial glass-plate work in Washington, D.C., in the early twentieth century. Visitors should note the streaks and blemishes, which come from natural deterioration of the original coatings.
