The Natchez Trace Parkway is a scenic road that follows the route of an old footpath linking Natchez, Mississippi, with Nashville, Tennessee, and the drawings collected under this heading record the corridor as a place of travel rather than a single site. The Trace was used for centuries by Native American peoples and later by settlers, traders and mail carriers who walked and rode its length, with boatmen floating goods downriver and then returning on foot along the path. Its modern form was built by the National Park Service in the 1930s and 1940s as a parkway for motorists, and the drawings are worth viewing with that long layering of use in mind.
