The name on this glass negative points to Amelita Galli-Curci, the Italian coloratura soprano who became one of the most popular singers in America after she joined the Chicago Opera in 1916. The Bain News Service, a New York press photography agency, produced portraits of performers and public figures like her for newspapers, and this plate is one of many such negatives in its collection. The record gives no date or occasion, and the title comes from caption information the agency recorded but that has not been independently verified. Her concert career and her phonograph recordings from the 1920s help explain why her likeness was in demand.
