The record spells the sitter's name "Galli - Curci," the hyphenated form of Amelita Galli-Curci, the Milan-born coloratura soprano who became one of the most celebrated singers of the 1910s and 1920s. She performed widely in the United States, sang with the Chicago Opera and then the Metropolitan Opera, and built a large following through her phonograph recordings. The Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied newspapers with photographs, took many portraits of performers, and this glass negative is one example of how such studio work recorded the stage personalities of the era. The date is not recorded, and the caption is unverified.
