The name on this glass negative points to Amelita Galli-Curci, the Italian coloratura soprano whose recitals, recordings, and Metropolitan Opera appearances made her one of the most popular singers in America during the 1920s. The record gives no date, and its title comes from caption cards the Bain News Service attached to its negatives, so the identification is not fully confirmed. Bain's New York staff supplied press photographs to newspapers and magazines, and portraits of performers were a steady part of that work. Images like this one document how celebrity was built and circulated in that period.
