Amelita Galli-Curci, the Italian coloratura soprano, is the subject of this glass negative, which the Bain News Service recorded with her husband. The record gives no date, and the title comes from caption information the agency supplied and was never checked. Galli-Curci was one of the most celebrated concert and opera singers in the United States in the 1910s and early 1920s, and press photographers often documented such performers and their private lives. The Bain Collection as a whole captures New York's news and celebrity world in the early twentieth century, so the picture is best read as a snapshot of that period's public interest in stars.
