Unlike the single-sitter portraits that fill much of the Bain collection, this glass negative pairs the soprano Amelita Galli-Curci with a man named Wagner, though the record does not say who he was or where the sitting took place. Galli-Curci, an Italian-born coloratura, became one of the most photographed concert singers in America after her U.S. debut in 1916. The Bain News Service, run by George Grantham Bain in New York, supplied newspapers with photographs like this one on deadline, so its negatives document early twentieth-century celebrity. The title comes from caption information the agency recorded and has not been verified, so the identifications are worth treating with some care.
