A troop of Boy Scouts sits mounted with spears raised overhead, a pose that turns a youth-movement drill into something closer to a cavalry parade. The glass negative comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, the photo archive of Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied newspapers with news pictures in the early twentieth century. Scouting arrived in America around 1910, and mounted troops drew attention for combining outdoor skills with old-fashioned horsemanship. The title comes from caption information written at the time and has not been independently verified, so the exact place and date remain uncertain.
